5 Ways to Empower Yourself for International Women’s Day

Learn to defend yourself this international women’s day

International women's day is a day where we bring further awareness to the issues women face across the UK. With the increasing violence against women in this country is so important that women learn the principles of self defence in order to avoid conflicts, gain confidence and increase safety.

1.Build Confidence Through Basic Techniques

Learning the fundamental physical skills of self-defence, such as basic escapes and preemptive strikes, is essential for effective personal safety. These skills, when taught within the framework of UK law, enable individuals to respond appropriately in a variety of situations.

Regular practice in self-defence classes can significantly boost confidence. This improvement in self-assurance can be transformative, equipping individuals with the tools to protect themselves and react strategically when faced with potential threats. Engaging consistently in these training sessions helps build a practical understanding of self-defence, ensuring that participants feel more secure in their ability to handle unexpected encounters.

2. Develop Situational Awareness

Awareness is the first and most important step in any self defence journey. Being able to recognize threats before they can escalate can be life saving. Learning how to read the body language of a potential aggressor, how to identify escape routes and how to avoid high risk situations are fundamental skills in self defence and can get you out of harms way before a situation escalates to the point were you have to use your physical skills. Regular practice of these skills will also help with decision making in high stress situations, helping you keep a level head and act appropriately.

3. Strengthen Your Physical and Mental Resilience

Self defence is not just about physical and brute strength, it’s about training your mindset. In classes we will not only work to make you fitter and stronger but also help improve your mental resilience and toughness. This will include training that will simulate high stress situations against an assailant, so that you can learn to manage your fear response and learn how to respond in a way that will give you the greatest chance of escaping a dangerous encounter.

4. Use Your Voice as a Powerful Weapon

Your voice can be a powerful weapon, using the correct pitch and tone in a confrontation with a potential assailant can help set boundaries, mange tempers and deescalate the situation.

Shouting can also draw the attention of other on lookers. This will make it clear that you are the victim and not the aggressor in the situation, may incentivize people to help or call the police and draw attention to the criminal.

Learning how to ask for help is also an invaluable skill. Telling people what and how to help will not only draw people in to help and support you but will also give you better control of the situation.

5. Support and Train with Other Women

Being able to share your experiences with like minded women will create a community of shared learning and empowerment. Together we can create a supportive and safe environment where women can lift each other and help improve their lives through self defence journey.
