Martial arts and self defence are very different practices.
The goals of each discipline is different. The goal of martial arts is to be able to win a bout against another trained opponent within a pre determined set of rules. The goal of self defense is survival.
This means being able to escape a criminal situation while receiving the least amount of harm and staying with in the parameters of the law.
There is cross over between martial arts and self defence, a good punch is a good punch in both practices.
But self defence needs its own practice and understanding for a person to become proficient at defending themselves. Martial arts will not cover this practice.
